Pavanne, cold steel woman Pavanne How do you love a woman With eyes cold as the barrel of her gun Who’s never missed her mark on anyone Pavanne, Pavanne, Pavanne
Casino doors swing open, the rich men raise their eyes They say who is this beauty as elegant as ice And later there’s an accident, another charge d’affair Is lying in a pool of blood, no witness anywhere And they say she was a hundred miles away The hotel porter saw her climb the stairs And the maid with trembling hands knows what to say When the judge says “Are your sure,” “I’m sure” she swears
Pavanne, cold steel woman Pavanne How do you love a woman With eyes cold as the barrel of her gun Who’s never missed her mark on anyone Pavanne, Pavanne, Pavanne
At the presidential palace a thousand people saw His excellency leave his car and never make the door The blood flows from his fingers as he clutches at the stain He staggers like a drunken man, lies twisted in the rain And they say she grew up well provided for Her mother used to keep her boys for sure And father’s close attentions led to talk She learned to stab her food with a silver fork
Pavanne, cold steel woman Pavanne
And they say she didn’t do it for the money And they say she didn’t do it for a man They say that she did it for the pleasure The pleasure of the moment
Pavanne, cold steel woman Pavanne How do you stop this woman When everyone is moving in a trance Like prisoners of some slow, courtly dance Pavanne, Pavanne, Pavanne Pavanne, Pavanne, Pavanne
1969 was a roller coaster year for Fairport Convention, full of triumphs and tragedies. One of its highlights was their brilliant third album. This is its story.
1969 was a roller-coaster year for Fairport Convention. In January of that year they released their second album What We Did On Our Holidays, the first one to feature singer Sandy Denny. In May they hit rock bottom with a tragedy that killed two people including one of its members. Miraculously they recovered and released the album that defines the Britishfolk rock revival of that period, the iconic Liege and Lief. By December Sandy Denny and bass player Ashley Hutchings left the band to form Fotheringay and Steeleye Span and the classic Fairport Convention lineup was no more. And that was not all, for these events book-ended one more album that the band managed to record and release during that prolific period, one of my favorite records from that era, Unhalfbricking.

Richard Thompson’s enduring musical influence and accomplishments are unparalleled. Having co-founded the groundbreaking group Fairport Convention as a teenager in the 1960s, he and his bandmates invented a distinctive strain of British folk-rock. He left the group by the age of 21, followed by a decade long musical partnership with his then-wife Linda, to over 30 years as a highly successful solo artist. Thompson’s genre defying mastery of both acoustic and electric guitar along with engaging energy and onstage wit continue to earn him new fans and a place as one of the most distinctive virtuosos and writers in folk-rock history. Powered by evocative songcraft, jaw-dropping guitar playing, and indefinable spirit, this venerable icon holds a coveted spot on Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” and counts Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Americana Music Association in Nashville and the UK Americana Music Association, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the BBC Folk Awards, a prestigious Ivor Novello Award and, of course, an OBE, among his many accolades.
A wide range of musicians have recorded Thompson’s songs including David Gilmour, Robert Plant, Elvis Costello, R.E.M., Sleater-Kinney, Del McCoury, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Jones, David Byrne, Don Henley, Los Lobos, and many more. His massive body of work includes many Grammy-nominated albums as well as numerous soundtracks, including Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man. Thompson’s latest album 13 Rivers (Proper Records) was released to widespread acclaim last September and appeared on many 2018 ‘best of the year’ lists. His accompanying tour was met with glowing reviews, including The Observer, in its Artist of the Week spread, who concluded, “Half a century after his first gig with Fairport Convention, folk-rocker Richard Thompson – trademark Stratocaster and beret intact – is as cool, energetic and contemporary as ever.”
