A new survey has suggested that England’s last remaining strongholds for Red Squirrels are being invaded by the non-native Grey Squirrel.
Volunteers for Red Squirrels Northern England (RSNE) visited 246 sites for its annual squirrel check in 2024 and found that, while Red Squirrel numbers were holding up, Grey Squirrels now outnumbered them in both Cumbria and Northumberland.
RSNE project officer Abbie McQueen called the substantial increase of Grey Squirrels “concerning”, but added: “We hope it can help build a case for further funding in areas that need it.” [ . . . ]
