A few things spring to mind.
Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.
For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.
So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.
Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever.
I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.
But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.
Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers.
And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.
There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface.
Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront.
Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.
And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist.
Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that.
He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat.
He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.
And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully.
That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead.
There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.
So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:
• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.
This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss.
After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.
God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.
He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.
In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.
And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish:

Now that he’s embroiled in bad foreign policy fiascos, we see that he is truly incompetent on all levels. There is no China deal. Nothing has changed with North Korea. And all of our allies are done with his antics. Maybe even Putin will cut him loose soon. Excellent piece, spot on… but! We inveigh against Trump at our own peril. He is what he is and has always been: a small-minded, bullying conman, but it’s the +/- 40% of Americans who support him, the Republican Party and most of their members of Congress (and perhaps now a majority of the Supreme Court). The “rot” is not confined solely to the White House.
Getting rid of Trump will be the tip of the iceberg. “His people” have tasted blood, the GOP (and their corporate special interest groups) have found a source of power and these politicians have found something that keeps them in office.
If Trump is gone, others of his ilk, maybe more polished, but more deadly, will rise to take his place. His “election” was not a blip and I fear, we haven’t seen the end of it. He is not a stable man and definitely does not need to be the leader of any country. His followers say to look at the economy. I’m not better off economically. I’m paying more for medications and health care. Food prices are rising because of embargoes. He is a bully, a womanizer, and a racist. As a Brit, we are appalled by Trump, and he has few supporters here. But be careful. I have an unpleasant feeling that if I was an unemployed former steel worker in Akron Ohio, he would have been appealing, and Hillary would have been everything that made me angry, the essence of liberal elitism. Are we English different?- note, I said English, as 63% of Scots voted Remain, but 55% of the English voted Leave, a large proportion of whom were working class midland and north country people. Why? Fed up with London metropolitan patronage , as Trump voters rejected East Coast insiders. If the economy stays good for the 40% of voters, I regret that he will likely be re-elected.
The supportive comments for this guy are not, I repeat, not the sentiment of most Americans. Not by a long shot. Even a large portion of those who voted for him know he’s not fit for the office. I suspect that the comments here that are wholeheartedly supportive are trolls, perhaps Russian trolls.

It seems to me the majority of supporters of D Trump reiterate the exact same talking points that are distributed by him and his cronies – and only the talking points. Ask them to support those points with specifics – they can’t. They can’t because they don’t know. The scary thing about that is that they truly don’t know what they are supporting.
I’m surprised at this article, I would think that British people would celebrate Trump. The racism is right up their ally. I mean, look at how they are treating Megan Markle in the press. Class?! I can understand Trump vs Hilary in a twat of the year contest but this was, ultimately, the choice voters faced for President of the USA. It’s like being offered Hitler or Stalin. As to how he got elected (besides the Electoral College quirk): 1. Fox News poisoned the well in regard to Hillary Clinton. For years, prior to the election, they planted the idea that she couldn’t be trusted and was a liar. Without basis, millions of people accepted that idea as fact. 2. Trump appealed to those afraid of immigrants and people of color. The undertone of racism drew in many people who had never been able to express or support their feelings in that regard.
Likewise, many of us have enough intelligence to note that this Huttish emperor wannabe not only isn’t wearing the proverbial clothes, he looks horrendous even when he is wearing something. His favorite garment is a self-satisfied smirk, broadcasting to everyone in the room what so many of them, sadly, cannot fathom: That he is laughing inside at how has utterly and completely fooled them into thinking he’s witty or strong or smart or funny or any of the qualities he so clearly lacks.
To those among these commenters who have expressed how badly we want him out of office, I would add that we also want Pence out of office, because he would and could be so many times worse.

This article is saying nothing essentially different from what I hear from CNN, MSNBC, ABC, AND TIME Magazine etc. The fact is Trump is always Trump, he has not changed, and he panders to no one. Americans knew who he was before they voted for him in 2016 and it does that they will change their minds in 2020. As an American I 100% agree with this article. It puzzles me as well that nearly 1/3 of my countrymen were taken in by this cheap huckster. I’m appalled – every single day. And I offer my heartfelt apologies to the world.

But as some pointed out, trump is not really the problem. trump didn’t change the GOP, he simply exposed it. He simply abandoned any pretense and put their “party first and win at any cost” (lie, cheat, steal) ethos right up front for all to see. and they love it.

Still, if you don’t see it, you don’t see it. The person who can’t see what Trump is must have difficulty in distinguishing false from true.
