British Writer Pens The Best Description Of Trump I’ve Read

Someone on Quora asked “Why do some British people not like Donald Trump?” Nate White, an articulate and witty writer from England wrote the following response:

A few things spring to mind.

Trump lacks certain qualities which the British traditionally esteem.
For instance, he has no class, no charm, no coolness, no credibility, no compassion, no wit, no warmth, no wisdom, no subtlety, no sensitivity, no self-awareness, no humility, no honour and no grace – all qualities, funnily enough, with which his predecessor Mr. Obama was generously blessed.
So for us, the stark contrast does rather throw Trump’s limitations into embarrassingly sharp relief.

Plus, we like a laugh. And while Trump may be laughable, he has never once said anything wry, witty or even faintly amusing – not once, ever.
I don’t say that rhetorically, I mean it quite literally: not once, not ever. And that fact is particularly disturbing to the British sensibility – for us, to lack humour is almost inhuman.

But with Trump, it’s a fact. He doesn’t even seem to understand what a joke is – his idea of a joke is a crass comment, an illiterate insult, a casual act of cruelty.

Trump is a troll. And like all trolls, he is never funny and he never laughs; he only crows or jeers.

And scarily, he doesn’t just talk in crude, witless insults – he actually thinks in them. His mind is a simple bot-like algorithm of petty prejudices and knee-jerk nastiness.

There is never any under-layer of irony, complexity, nuance or depth. It’s all surface.

Some Americans might see this as refreshingly upfront.
Well, we don’t. We see it as having no inner world, no soul.

And in Britain we traditionally side with David, not Goliath. All our heroes are plucky underdogs: Robin Hood, Dick Whittington, Oliver Twist.
Trump is neither plucky, nor an underdog. He is the exact opposite of that.
He’s not even a spoiled rich-boy, or a greedy fat-cat.

He’s more a fat white slug. A Jabba the Hutt of privilege.

And worse, he is that most unforgivable of all things to the British: a bully.
That is, except when he is among bullies; then he suddenly transforms into a snivelling sidekick instead.

There are unspoken rules to this stuff – the Queensberry rules of basic decency – and he breaks them all. He punches downwards – which a gentleman should, would, could never do – and every blow he aims is below the belt. He particularly likes to kick the vulnerable or voiceless – and he kicks them when they are down.

So the fact that a significant minority – perhaps a third – of Americans look at what he does, listen to what he says, and then think ‘Yeah, he seems like my kind of guy’ is a matter of some confusion and no little distress to British people, given that:
• Americans are supposed to be nicer than us, and mostly are.
• You don’t need a particularly keen eye for detail to spot a few flaws in the man.

This last point is what especially confuses and dismays British people, and many other people too; his faults seem pretty bloody hard to miss.
After all, it’s impossible to read a single tweet, or hear him speak a sentence or two, without staring deep into the abyss. He turns being artless into an art form; he is a Picasso of pettiness; a Shakespeare of shit. His faults are fractal: even his flaws have flaws, and so on ad infinitum.
God knows there have always been stupid people in the world, and plenty of nasty people too. But rarely has stupidity been so nasty, or nastiness so stupid.

He makes Nixon look trustworthy and George W look smart.
In fact, if Frankenstein decided to make a monster assembled entirely from human flaws – he would make a Trump.

And a remorseful Doctor Frankenstein would clutch out big clumpfuls of hair and scream in anguish:
‘My God… what… have… I… created?
If being a twat was a TV show, Trump would be the boxed set.

  1. Dead on Nate. I hold close the faith that almost half of our great country has just temporarily lost their collective mind. They could not possibly support a PATHOLOGICAL liar who is so cruel, so crass, so…..EVERYTHING!! And to mention the economy in the face of this evil, must surely be akin to selling your soul to the devil!
Keep your money, your jobs, and I will keep my soul. This is how over half of us in this country feel everyday. Its like a never ending nightmare from which we cannot wake.

    1. I think that Nate is articulate and is calling it as he sees it… which is unfortunate that I see those truths too. I’m not going to spend a lot of my energy on the negative actions or reactions of another. But the big thing I notice and want to point out is how everyone has their own opinion which is just that. I’ve seen name calling, derogatory comments and natural defense of one’s opinions by brilliant people. I also sense the wounded ego and need to be right. I have really awesome friends who see Mr. Donald as a great leader and yes they are my friends – I won’t divorce them because they see something differently than me. That’s all I have to say! P.S. I adore British Humor 🙂

      1. Another right of privilege – POC don’t really have that option, when our “friends” opted for trump they opted out of our lives. this is not a matter of simple politics, this is a matter or ideology, of what will be allowed. And they thought nothing of it.

      2. Another right of privilege. For many POC when our wondefulr “friends” opted for trump, they opted out of our lives. this isn’t politics, this is a core belief system that left unchecked gets people killed. Sadly, I’ve had to “divorce some friends and even my church and… it’s not about whether there are other opinions, it’s not about free speech, or any of the “conversations” that should or should not happen. this is a matter of life – or death.

      7. I understand the support for his policies, but you can’t ignore the overwhelming evidence that he is the wrong man to be put in charge. He is ignorant, incompetent, and by definition a sociopath. He is a great conman and master of the media. He has no class and doesn’t know that it’s something that money can’t buy. At age 61 I’ve never been as worried about our national security and the constitution and rule of law like I am now

      8. Unfortunately, Nate’s “opinion,” as you call it, about this Oval Office occupant is based on primary sources: what we all see, hear, and read on a daily basis. It’s not really “calling it as he sees it;” It’s calling it as it IS.

      9. You have friends who see Trump as a great leader despite daily evidence to the contrary. He clearly is not great. He does not lead. He is an unrepentant liar and a bully. Fact check if you and your friends have any doubts. His own party doubts his competency but they fear loss of votes if they defy him. His presidency is an anomaly without precedent. How are you friends with so much ignorance and denial?

      10. Would you keep those friends if they had just one of those qualities? Perhaps the one of groping women? Groping his daughter in public? Repeatedly referring to his lust for his daughter? How about his lust for underage girls? Would you keep such a friend? How about support for other paedophiles? How about a habit of refusing to pay for things, causing one’s business to fail? Is that ok to keep such a friend?

Sorry, but your attempt at open mindedness reflects an inability to recognize something profoundly wrong in anyone who ever supported the US president, especially those who continue to do so. He has conned many intelligent people into believing he is a “Great Leader.” Forgive your friends, Debee, for being swept up by his fake charm and flawless guile, but it is your duty to do all you can to turn them away from their acceptance of it. A true friend could do nothing less.

    3. WOW what a great op-ed! Nate White, I tip my hat.
Can’t resist sharing my poem to Donald Trump. I wrote this in 2016, months before Trump was “elected” by the Electoral College. Goes like this:

      ODE TO DONALD DUMP
      May 30, 2016

Trumpty Dumpty built a big wall
And Trumpty Dumpty’s bluster and gall
has uptight white ladies and angry white men
      feeling entitled and special again
Endorsed by the likes of the Koo-Kluckin’ Klan
with David Duke one of Trump’s better-known fans
Where Mexicans, Muslims and black folks get blamed
and poor folks and gay folks ridiculed and shamed
and women are targeted, atheists too,
by those who think white male privilege their due
or whatever their claim to what lies beyond reach
of most of us suckers to whom they might preach
What never occurs to these ignorant fools-
they’re outnumbered by us! And majority rules!
So those for whom hate is the #1 sport
Their hate list is long but their logic falls short
The witch hunts, the blame game, just more of the same
from the pampered and privileged and self-ordained
He’s full of himself and he thinks he’s all that
just an overgrown, bellicose, self-absorbed brat
      ‘Cause Trumpty Dumpty’s grandiose wall
is nothing but huffing and puffing, is all—
No matter the corporate spin version, y’all
The higher he builds it, the harder he’ll fall

You’re a mean one, Mr Trump
      You really are a heel
You’re as cuddly as a cactus
You’re as charming as an eel
      Mr. trump!
      You’re a bad banana
      With a greasy black peel!

      You’re a monster, Mr.Trump!
      Your heart’s an empty hole
Your brain is full of spiders
You’ve got garlic in your soul
      Mr. Trump!
      I wouldn’t touch you
      With a thirty-nine-and-a-half foot pole!

You’re a vile one, Mr. Trump!
You have termites in your smile
You have all the tender sweetness
      Of a seasick crocodile
      Mr.Trump!
Given the choice between the two of you
      I’d take the seasick crocodile!

You’re a foul one, Mr. Trump!
      You’re a nasty, wasty skunk!
Your heart is full of unwashed socks
Your soul is full of gunk
      Mr. Trump!
The three words that best describe you
Are as follows, and I quote
      “Stink, stank, stunk!”

      You’re a rotter, Mr. Trump!
You’re the king of sinful sots!
      Your heart’s a dead tomato
      Splotched with moldy, purple spots
      Mr.Trump!
Your soul is an apalling dump-heap
      Overflowing with the most disgraceful
      Assortment of deplorable rubbish imaginable
      Mangled-up in tangled-up knots!

      You nauseate me, Mr.Trump!
      With a nauseous super naus!
      You’re a crooked jerky jockey
And you drive a crooked hoss
      Mr.Trump!
      You’re a three-decker sauerkraut
      And toadstool sandwich
      With arsenic sauce!

Jesus warned us we are living in Satan’s kingdom and Satan would steal our soul anyway he can! You can hate God for putting Trump in the White House, but Hell is an eternity, not a hundred year streak. May all our Christian children grow to follow Trump’s moral example. To philander without shame, to cheat without remorse, to assault and bully without restraint, to hoard vast wealth, to spurn philanthropy, to denigrate difference, mock the weak, and rally around hate – these are surely the characteristics Jesus seeks for future generations of his followers.

Where the Romans and the Communists and the Muslims have all failed to destroy Christianity, the American Christian Right is is succeeding by willingly sacrificing every shred of value and morality in their sycophantic support of the inhuman Donald Trump.

Micheal, if your god, the god of love, has to resort to a man who cannot be more contrary to love to spread his influence and “love”, there is something seriously wrong with either your allmighty god or with the leader of your religion. I am convinced the evangelical church using the antithesis of everything that god supposedly stands for as their leader, or as you say, god chose trump, I would say that the evangelical church chose trump as a perfect candidate for them to obtain more power, influence and wealth to spread their message of misogyny, bigotry and racial hate. This has nothing to do with religion and all to do with peoples persuit of power, greed and wealth, like the churches have been doing since inception.

Many got to live in nice homes, forcefully vacated by Jewish families, and the German mark began to soar. So yes, good economies can make people sell their souls, most unfortunately! 😞

He is in public office and therefore subject to public scrutiny — any public. Part of his job as a public figure is to conduct himself in a manner appropriate to his position. Sadly, he is completely incapable of doing that, but in accepting the office, he accepted the public’s right to judge his performance.

The man that set up All County Building Supply and Maintenance as a shell company purely to dodge taxes? The man who evaded sales taxes on jewelry for his mistress then, when caught, avoided prosecution by ratting on his friends for doing the same thing?

Faith? Donald Trump is the only fully atheistic, fully non-religious man to hold the office of president.

Patriotism? The man who criticizes Gold Star parents? Name one case where he has defended the rights of someone who wasn’t supportive or loyal to HIM personally. Name one case where he has helped anyone who wasn’t in some way useful to him.

People who are defined by who they like, do not like Donald Trump. People who are defined by who they hate (in your case, Liberals) like Donald Trump because you think he hates Liberals. But he doesn’t – he just hates whoever is against him and uses whoever can help or praise him. You think he likes rural white people because he’s sympathetic? He’s not – he LIKES rich and powerful people. Rural whites are just useful to him because he can manipulate them for his own gain.

He is a narcissistic sociopath without any personal friends, who finds joy in nothing but winning and bullying other people. No other public figure (outside of famous criminals) lacks humanity more than Donald Trump.

Ha does not give a damn about the american people . He is making money off of his presidency which is why the emoluments clause was put in place. How about his foreign policies? He kisses the asses of every autocrat around and DISRESPECTS HIS OWN INTELLIGENCE agencies! These men and women have put their lives on the line to-protect this nation’s national security. This dipshit president abandoned our allie in Syria which has resulted in the loss of life AND the frickin release of ISIS soldiers. Joan and all you other Trump supporters it is time to get your heads out of your asses because our democracy and national security is at stake!

  7. You are SO RIGHT ON!! I do not believe he was ever “elected” legally. He was bought in and is causing our
whole democracy to wither and die. Most people I know cannot figure out how he seems to have so much power
since we have a Congress that we thought was supposed to make major decisions. I am so embarrassed right now to be an American. Many, many of us feel this way & hope the world does not think that we love Trump…he
is despicable and I wake up each morning wishing he had died overnight!

I’m all for strength in leadership but there isn’t any – he sacks anyone who stands up to him and anyone who disagrees with him has some form of mental problem, according to him. He’s a dangerous joke.

  10. America, like most countries, has its repugnant underbelly. Our Conservatives have for decades “ginned up” the least educated, culturally ignorant of their base to the point where the Obamas are the villains and the Trumps heroes. Many Americans are dumbfounded at the Right Wing’s sheep mentality; they believe EVERYTHING Trump says. He claims repairing parts of our damaged border fencing is building his wall. They believe. He brags about rolling back regulations and they cheer, unaware that those rollbacks endanger their health and/or livelihoods. I could go on but suffice to say, the guy currently squatting in our White House has told 13,435 lies in 993 days. Politifact has a list of “All False statements involving Donald Trump”, it’s 13 pages long. YET THE UNDERBELLY QUESTIONS NOTHING. Thinking, compassionate, patriotic Americans are humiliated that this bloviating ignoramus Putin’d his way into the White House. For my part, if God forbid he is re-elected in 2020, do you have a room for rent?

corrupt world of politics. Nice people come last .
the strong ones we do not like, but they take on the tough questions of the day & debate them. they do not follow the status quo. they make things happen when lesser leaders just do nothing. The world needs leaders who will stand up to the powerful entitled interest & ask why? Thus the DONALD got elected. there are many people who voted for him. stop crying & complaining & let things unfold.
you maybe greatly surprised. & yes one gets to vote him out if they choose. lets see what happens
it certainly will be entertaining. More fun then sports now.

What exactly has he accomplished? I will tell you…He has accomplished being elected despite his bragging about getting away with grabbing women’s genitals because “he is famous”. He got elected despite the fact that he makes fun of a disabled journalist in front of his laughing supporters. Now that he has been in office for close to 2 years WHAT HAS HE ACCOMPLISHED? There is no wall. He separated immigrant children from their parents. He has managed to tell over 13,000 lies and still has the support of ignorant Americans. He basically states that he believes Putin over the his own intelligence community. The list goes on and on…He is a fraud , conman, sexual assailant, liar, narcissist, draft dodging, cruel human being and I hope that our country will survive his presidency.

  15. Maybe to answer your question, how do so many Americans not see the faults of Trump and support him regardless: because so many Americans either have similar faults and don’t realize or don’t care he has these faults. The latter of which is most troubling. Such folks have an insatiable need for a savior, legitimate or not. They want someone to care for them, in part, because they lived a life in which care-taking and care-receiving was not experienced, or emaciated at best. They are the ‘suckers’ at the carnival and willingly buy the snake oil. The sad thing is Trump doesn’t give a flying fnck about the needs of such people or that they are being had. He doesn’t care for the needs of any other American who doesn’t fit within his own hermetic agenda. And his agenda is is money-as-Viagra. He is completely in this for himself. And so when a portion of American citizens wants something from ‘Big Daddy’ and Big Daddy can only kick them in the crotch, repeat ad infinitum, you are witness to the archetypal f-d up relationship conundrum in the USA. I would guess this exists in the UK, too. Capacity for humor and capacity for care-given are mutually exclusive.

If you were writing a book, surely an editor somewhere would say that the character of 45 lacks any depth at all and is merely a caricature as written …. and this after the decency and respectability of Obama. If there is one thing America has done so well, is to promote and sell the country to the rest of the world successfully. Fast forward forty years later I find myself in a nightmare that I can’t seem to wake up from all because of one “man” living on Pennsylvania Avenue. Like the saying goes “ every nation deserves who they elect into office” Nothing new about this man, Americans knew all along who they were getting as the “leader” of the “free world” For now, I just want to wake up from this nightmare.

As it is , many in the Congress are NOT seeking re-election. Caring—? Yes , he cares about himself. If he gives the appearance of caring , there is an ulterior motive. He came to the office with absolutely no credentials, no preparation whatsoever. He is a cutthroat businessman, make the deal, get what you want no matter the cost & he cost us plenty in his billions he lost when he went bankrupt & never paid a dime in taxes. We the working people have to make up for that ! Yes—a lot of people voted for him, those who feel disenfranchised, left behind, foreigners taking their jobs & jobs leaving the country. Trump told them whatever they wanted to hear to get their vote & it worked. How would you like the maintenance man taking out your appendix? Well that is what we are stuck with !! 😩. 27. President Trump isn’t the problem…the problem is the appearance of politicians (whatever party they hail from) appearing to have their constituents best intentions at heart and their backs.

The US and other nations, have endured their share of poor leaders for some time…it’s stupid to think that he will take down the US single handily. The US has a much bigger issue…it’s when the pendulum swings to excess, either right or left, causing irrevocable damage in the process. This is a culmination of politicians forgetting that the US is and should be based on We the People, not We the Politicians.

Trump is many of the things that we don’t want in our leaders…but when the alternate is so distasteful that he becomes our president, the underlying problem needs to be addressed thoughtfully.

Being a politician is not about being politically correct…it’s about making sure We the People are governed well. Trump may not fit the image that many of us expect of a leader, but he is the president. Although the opposing party can’t accept that fact, it would do us well if we spent less time bashing him and more time creating a better outcome for us to vote for in a leader…one who is inspiring, leads with a purpose-driven vision for all and truly believes in governing based on We the People.

Many of you will disagree with me, but we haven’t had a leader like that for sometime…the framers, for the most part, would be very disappointed in what politicians have become today.

  30. As an American, and former New Yorker all too familiar with the Trump and his family, I am also often perplexed with his popularity with certain elements in the country. I have always known about Trump — ever since I became personally familiar with a case in which his real estate company in Queens refused to rent an apartment to a mixed race couple. The wife, who was white, went to the rental office to apply for the apartment. When the application was accepted, and she went back with her husband, who was black, to sign the lease and get the keys, they were told the apartment was no longer for available. I was around 13 when I heard that story.
Unlike so many who flocked from all around the world to see it, I was never an admirer of the original “Trump Tower” on Fifth Avenue. I always thought it was an eye soar that violated the architectural character of the neighborhood — and those trees sticking out of the corners in the middle of the building look stupid. But if you read the story of how this building got to be there, it will tell you all about how Trump does not believe that neither the law, nor the rules of decency, apply to him. It is a lesson taught to him by the mayors of that city — from Abe Beam to Rudy Giuliani. Mr. Trump’s famous comment, “When you’re a celebrity, they let you grab them by the pussy,” can be applied to these mayors as well.
The ability to run through red lights and cut through red tape to “get things done” is one of the things Trump’s admirers like about him. Unless, of course, you’re on the victim side of that transaction. Zoning laws exist for a reason, as most laws do. One of the stories that I’m familiar with is of a young couple who bought an apartment with a magnificent view of the Hudson River. Before making the purchase, they had asked the landlord, “What if somebody puts up a building to block our view?” Not to worry, they were told, the zoning laws won’t allow that to happen. But since the zoning laws don’t apply to Donald Trump, that is exactly what happened. After just one year of residence, the couple was forced to sell their apartment at a loss.
Lastly, having a friend who is a judge who has done several depositions in cases involving Donald Trump, I am also familiar with Mr. Trump’s connections to the mob. Enough said.
Besides Mr. Trump’s miseducation by the city’s mayors, here is another clue to understanding his popularity: the media has been infatuated with this man from the beginning. Particularly, the news media has followed him, not because he provides news, but because he provides entertainment, which is what American news mostly is now. To this day, every tweet is another chapter in the silly circus. He makes their work easy.
When Mr. Trump was campaigning in 2016, every cable news show, even the progressive Rachel Maddow, interrupted their program to broadcast his rallies from beginning to end. They did that for no other presidential candidate, in spite of laws that compel them to give equal time to all the candidates. My protests to these companies to point out the racist comments that Trump made during those rallies fell on deaf ears. The media are now contorting themselves to figure out how to get rid of the monster they created.
So that, to a large extent, explains Mr. Trump’s popularity in the States. Now, you Brits please explain how your queen can host this monster with all the ceremony reserved for a decent human being. Sure, she has to do what she is told, but would she have done the same thing if she had been told to host Adolf Hitler?

    1. In think to define President Trump one does not have to write an essay. In my opinion his fault is he is not CIVIL and does not have a dignified behavior fit for a human, what to talk of a president.

Many Americans support him because some of his policies are right. He is right we should not have enormous trade deficits and outsourcing of jobs. That benefits special interests in U.S. who control the country. He is right a country must have control on its borders. He is right many of U.S. allies, in my opinion they are not allies, they are accomplices, do not contribute their fare share to common expeditions. He is right U.S. should not engage in 24/7 wars, it also benefits the special interests in U.S. where small people are losing their sons and daughters.

Lastly, unfortunately President is not competent in Government affairs because he is rookie. Because of that he is not able to accomplish the right policies and we are left with an uncivil person.
